Amanda Kitchen of Pura Vida Holistic Therapies and Yoga and Julie Keen of Unbound https://julieunbound.co.uk/, are excited to be hosting this transformative event of passive yoga, cacao, mantra/meditation and sound healing and we can’t wait to welcome you.
As we transition from Autumn in to Winter, this is a perfect time of year to hibernate, slow down and practice self-care, self-nurturing and self-soothing.  Restorative and Yin yoga are both passive forms of yoga and are ideal for resting, rejuvenating and restoring the body which is when the body heals itself and brings itself back into balance (homeostasis).  How often do we ignore what our bodies are trying to tell us? i.e. to rest. We soldier on regardless but if we continue to ignore the warning signs, that is when disease can manifest in the body or the body says “No” and literally shuts down.  I have seen a large increase in clients coming to see me with auto immune diseases including ME, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis all of which are caused by the body being in a permanently stressed state.  So come and immerse yourselves in this half day of self-care, self-nurturing and self-soothing.  After all, it is what you and your body deserve.
Introductions/Journaling – Amanda to open

Cacao ceremony – Julie Keen

During the Cacao ceremony you will be invited to spend a few moments to contemplate your healing intention for the afternoon ahead.

Julie will share a little ‘Cacao wisdom’ as we move into honouring and paying gratitude to our ancestors and to this sacred and nourishing, heart-healing plant medicine as we invite Her into our most precious body.

Restorative/yin yoga – Amanda

Self massage – Amanda

Mantra/meditation – Julie

In this nurturing afternoon of self-care and restoration we will be chanting the beautiful peace invoking mantra:

Oṁ Śāntiḥ Oṁ  – Om Shanti Om – ‘Peace be with you’

Oṃ is the eternal source-sound-vibration of creation.

Shanti means ‘Peace’ – Peace in body, peace in mind, peace in speech or spirit.

Chanting this beautiful mantra also allows us to bring peace to our past, present and future.

The word ‘mantra’ means ‘mind protector’ and is made up of two Sanskrit words: manas which means ‘mind’ and trai which means ‘to protect’ or to ‘free from’.

In this guided mantra meditation you will be invited to connect with your own inner sanctuary to find peace within by chanting this beautiful mantra OM Shanti Om.

Please don’t worry if you prefer not to chant.  You will be guided into the meditation and Julie will lead the mantra while you relax and receive the blessings and vibrational healing from the sounds that are created.

Some benefits of chanting a mantra:

Feeling more relaxed and peaceful; improving concentration; managing illness and releasing ‘dis-ease’; promoting good health and wellbeing; increasing energy levels; improving breathing and respiratory function; opening the throat chakra; dealing more positively with life situations and challenges; setting intentions to bring about life-enhancing changes and rebalancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

“The great mantras are thousands of years old, handed down orally from master to disciple, student and apprentice.  In essence they are golden vibrations of light, transmitting the deepest communion with subatomic particles, molecules and cells of or body-minds, awakening the energies of Love” (Chloé Goodchild, 2015: 110).

Amanda and me are so looking forward to sharing these ‘golden vibrations of light’ with you as we all chant this beautiful mantra together!!   Om Shanti Om.

The Gong Relaxation Sound Bath – Amanda Kitchen

A Gong Relaxation Sound Bath is a fantastic way to leave behind the pressures of modern life. The session will begin with some gentle drumming followed by the mesmerising crystal bowls and the  Himalayan singing bowls leading into the powerful gongs. The captivating tones will lull you into a deep, restorative relaxation and your body will take what it needs from the vibrations of the instruments bringing it back into balance (homeostasis) which is when the bodies own self-healing mechanisms kick in.  There will be a short period of silence and then you will be brought round with the tinkling of percussion instruments.
There are several health benefits associated with achieving this state of deep relaxation including lower blood pressure, increased blood circulation, balancing of the nervous system, reduced mind chatter, better sleep patterns. Some people gain mental clarity or feel very energised by the sessions. The session may even enhance your creativity and lift your mood if you are feeling low.
Some people also experience a reduced sense of pain, plus relief from symptoms of ongoing medical conditions and illnesses as the vibrations work at a cellular level. The sound helps to induce our natural relaxation response, taking us out of ‘fight or flight’ mode and into our restorative, parasympathetic state and puts us into an altered state of consciousness, altering our brainwaves.
In my experience, people with auto-immune conditions and conditions involving the nervous system seem to feel considerable benefits.
Participants generally leave with a feeling of inner peace, calmness and tranquillity and a reduction in stress, anxiety or worry.
A Gong Relaxation sound bath works on all levels of your being – mind, body, soul & spirit. The sound vibrations will provide a ‘sonic massage’ to your physical self and subtle energy fields, leaving you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and restored.

Amanda Kitchen of Pura Vida Holistic Therapies and Yoga and Julie Keen of Unbound https://julieunbound.co.uk/, are excited to be hosting this transformative event of collaborative movement, cacao, mantra/meditation and sound and we can’t wait to welcome you.
Introduction – Amanda to open

Cacao ceremony – Julie Keen

During the Cacao ceremony you will be invited to spend a few moments to contemplate your healing intention for the afternoon ahead.

Julie will share a little ‘Cacao wisdom’ as we move into honouring and paying gratitude to our ancestors and to this sacred and nourishing, heart-healing plant medicine as we invite Her into our most precious body.

Hatha yoga – Amanda

We will be focusing on the root chakra or Muladhara meaning root support or foundation which is located at the base of the spine and represents the earth element (Prithvi).  Autumn is a really lovely time of year to focus on our root chakras as we gather and harvest fruits and berries from the earth we can also plug ourselves into the earth, channelling energies to and from mother earth.

This time of year is also a fantastic time to think about letting go of anything that no longer serves us, just as the trees let go of their leaves to make a void to bring something in that will.

The session will begin with some grounding, arriving and settling on the mat followed by a nourishing warm up.   Amanda will then focus on postures relating to the root chakra so mainly standing postures focusing on grounding into the earth and solidity.  These postures are brilliant for building strength and stability in the body. A short cool down will lead into Julie’s mantra/meditation.

Mantra meditation – Julie

Guan Yin – Guānyīn – Guanshiyin – Goddess of Compassion and Mercy

Her mantra = ‘Om Manī Padme Ḥum’    pronounced – Oom – Manee – Pad-may – Ḥhum

An ancient Buddhist mantra, often known as the ‘Mani’ Mantra which is translated as:

“Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus” / “The Jewel is in the Lotus”

You will be guided into mantra meditation where you will meet the most loving Goddess of mercy and compassion, Guan Yin / Kuan Yin.  Guan Yin is the most frequently used Chinese translation of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśhvara (the thousand-armed, thousand-eyed goddess who ‘observes the sounds of the world’, ‘sees all suffering’ and imparts her love, compassion, wisdom and healing as she holds us in her arms).

In this guided meditation you will be invited to meet the Goddess Guan Yin and chant her mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’.  Please don’t worry if you prefer not to chant.  Julie will guide you into the meditation and chant the mantra while you relax and receive the blessings and vibrational healing from Guan Yin.

Some benefits of chanting mantra:

The word ‘mantra’ means ‘mind protector’ and is made up of two Sanskrit words: manas which means ‘mind’ and trai which means ‘to protect’ or to ‘free from’.

Mantra can help with: feeling more relaxed and peaceful; improving concentration; managing illness and releasing ‘dis-ease’; promoting good health and wellbeing; increasing energy levels; improving breathing and respiratory function; opening the throat chakra; dealing more positively with life situations and challenges; setting intentions to bring about life-enhancing changes and rebalancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

Nurturing cacao ceremony, guided meditation and Hatha yoga for the menopause – Amanda

What is cacao and how can it benefit the menopause?

Cacao comes from the bean, is a beautiful, sacred, ancient plant medicine, having incredible healing properties and is considered as a superfood so it is very nutritious containing wonderful healthy fats, excellent levels of magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, calcium, manganese, sulphur and phosphorous, which our diet is generally deficient in. Our bodies need all of these wonderful minerals for our emotional and physical well-being and balance so it’s fantastic to work with for the menopause. It has a real emotional grounding and heart opening energy to it.

Pure, ceremonial grade cacao is raw chocolate without all the vegetable oils and sugar we see added to processed chocolate and it doesn’t come in powder form so don’t confuse it with cocoa powder or hot chocolate.  Ceremonial cacao comes in a solid – usually a block as it contains all the original healthy wonderful fats.

Benefits of cacao:

  • Balances and acts as an anti-depressant
  • Helps to protect from metabolic and environment toxins
  • Assists in regulating the heart rate and blood pressure
  • Reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks
  • Builds strong bones
  • Balances the brain chemistry
  • Helps to regulate and reduce symptoms of PMS
  • Helps to increase focus and alertness
  • Detoxifies the liver
  • Helps with healthy pancreas function
  • Facilitates anti-aging and rejuvenation
  • Reduces appetite helping with weight loss

A short, grounding and heart opening meditation will follow, focusing on the Earth element (Prithvi) to help us connect with the root chakra, Muladhara – meaning root, support or foundation – located in the base of the spine and the heart chakra – Anahata located in the centre of the chest which relates to the element of air.  Amanda will then guide you through a nourishing and balancing Hatha yoga session  focusing on postures that support the menopause including hot flushes, anxiety, irritability and insomnia.  Some restorative postures will be included as they relax the nervous system and may improve the functioning of the endocrine system which is responsible for hormone production (especially the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the thyroid and parathyroid glands which help the body regulate hormonal fluctuations.

Outline of the Day

Welcome and introductions.

Amanda will then lead you in a nurturing Cacao ceremony. Cacao is an ancient, healing sacred plant heart medicine that enables us to connect with ourselves personally using intentions and helps us release pent up emotions and that which no longer serves us. Cacao is a feminine plant spirit that will help to guide, support and bring intention to the light, open heart so you may live from the heart at all times and sparkle and shine your light. You can purchase your ceremonial grade organic cacao from : https://www.forevercacao.co.uk/?ref=deze1xojhot. Alternative suggestions will be emailed to you prior to the event.

Benefits of cacao:

The benefits are many but here are a few:

Increases focus and concentration.
Brings a deep feeling of calmness and peace and is a natural anti-depressant
It is a powerful antioxidant and contains excellent levels of magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, calcium, manganese, sulphur and phosphorous, which our diet is generally deficient in
Our bodies need all of these wonderful minerals for our emotional and physical well-being and balance
Strengthens the cardiovascular system, heart function
Regulates blood pressure and blood sugar
Heart healing

Amanda will follow with a short, grounding meditation, focusing on the Earth element (Prithvi) to help us connect with the root chakra, Muladhara – meaning root, support or foundation – located in the base of the spine.
A nourishing Hatha yoga session with Jools will then follow, continuing the theme of the Earth Element, the first chakra which is associated with grounding, stabilising, security, safety, solidity and balancing. When the root chakra is balanced, we cultivate stillness, solidity, and stability giving us a feeling of being resilient, confident, flexible, strong and safe.

“It is not how far you move into a pose but how deeply you feel the pose that you are in”. – ANODEA JUDITH

Amanda will teach the second half of the yoga class, continuing to focus on the heart, the fourth chakra (Anahata) to open and expand the heart and to allow dissolution of ego and separateness. When the heart is open, we feel compassion, love, peace and kindness not only towards others, but also towards ourselves. And when the heart chakra is balanced, we feel radiant, joyful and generous. Amanda will focus on postures to open the chest and shoulders, backbends and breath openers, allowing for spaciousness and expansion.
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it” – RUMI.

A 30-minute lunch break will precede the second half of the retreat day.

Join Jools and Amanda in four demonstrations of highly nutritious, nourishing and energising vegan and/or vegetarian plant-based cookery demonstrations. The recipes will use both raw and cooked ingredients. The recipe, method and benefits of each will be emailed to participants prior to the retreat day. Below are the four delicious delights:

AMANDA

Delicious green breakfast.

This delicious green breakfast is packed full of nutrients and contains numerous vitamins and minerals so it’s a fantastic way to start your day. It’s a great source of antioxidants, which help strengthen your immune system by defending cells against free radical damage and help increase the production of white blood cells, helping to protect your body against infections and disease, which is especially important at this time.

Organic cacao energy balls.

These healthy and raw organic Cacao energy balls are a snap to make and require no cooking, just chilling. A perfect pre or post work-out snack, portable pick-me-up or healthy sweet treat

JOOLS

Kombucha

What is Kombucha and its benefits?

Kombucha is a fermented tea which is full of beneficial probiotics, polyphenols and vitamin C, Kombucha helps increase the diversity of the beneficial bacteria in the gut. These probiotic bacteria help balance the immune system, regulate the metabolism and recent research points to a link between a health gut microbiome and a healthy mind. In addition, the probiotics help improve digestion and elimination and can be very beneficial to people suffering with disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s disease and leaky gut syndrome. Kombucha is lightly fizzy and tastes a little like cider but only contains a negligible amount of alcohol. It’s delicious and very refreshing when chilled and can be used as the basis of cocktails and salad dressings. It can be flavoured using fresh fruits, herbs and spices and it’s fun to experiment to find your favourite! Brewing your own couldn’t be easier and the raw ingredients are cheap and readily available.

Green soup

A delicious, quick and easy to prepare vegan soup, which is a powerhouse of nutrients including vitamins, minerals and phyto nutrients. The soup is made from an array of green vegetables which are known to contain substances which act as powerful antioxidants in the body. The soup promotes the health of the liver, is anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic and anti-viral. The high fibre content helps eliminate toxins in the body and the high level of beta carotene and polyphenols promote the health of the skin, bones and internal organs. The ingredients can be varied to suit whatever is available and in season and is ideal to use up any surplus vegetables from the allotment or garden. You will be amazed at how good this tastes!

Jools will then lead the group through a calming Pranayama practice, Nadi Soshana, helping to bring the energy channels of the body, the Nadis, into equilibrium. This will lead into our final practice of the day, a wonderfully relaxing Yoga Nidra, or yogic ‘sleep’, designed to lead you into a stage of deep relaxation, whilst maintaining full consciousness of the workings of the body, mind and emotions.

The yoga we will explore will predominantly be Hatha based but we will also explore elements of Vinyasa flow.

HATHA YOGA

Hatha Yoga works at a slower pace and works with individual postures and includes pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation and relaxation.   It is ideal for those beginning their yoga journey and who are newer to yoga or for those who want to improve their practice.

Classes will begin with some pranayama to settle you on the mat and connect your mind with your breath and body followed by a nourishing warm up leading into an energising asana practice (postures) to improve your flexibility, stability, strength and muscle tone.  Awaken your senses with a guided, restorative savasana (relaxation) followed by a guided meditation to cultivate a calm, steady mind and connect with your inner-self and boost feelings of wellbeing and happiness.

VINYASA FLOW YOGA

Vinyasa flow is a dynamic, creative style of yoga in which the asana (postures) are linked together and synchronised with a yogic breath. This style of yoga allows you to feel the physical power of a yoga practice. When we begin to move through a physical flow with the breath our inner energies begin to flow more freely through the body leaving us feeling energised and revitalised.  This style is rooted in Ashtanga so often includes an Ashtanga style ‘vinyasa’ to link sequences – unlike Ashtanga, you will enjoy and experience a creative mixture of postures and sequencing rather than it being set. Sessions typically begin with pranayama to connect the mind with the body and breath followed by an energising warm up. A cool down is followed by a short savasana.

PRANAYAMA WORKSHOPS

We will explore different forms of Pranayama to switch on the Parasympathetic Nervous System to cultivate a calm mind and help alleviate stress, anxiety and mild depression.  We will also explore some pranayama techniques that are more energising for the body.

MEDITATION WORKSHOPS

Control and/or quieten the mind focusing on different meditation techniques such as visualisation using nature and the five great elements, (earth, water, fire, air and space), mantras, a word repeated to aid concentration, chanting, focusing on internal sound (nada) and chakras to bring you into conscious being and connect with your inner-self to cultivate joy and happiness.  Just being rather than doing.
