I have been on a journey with Yoga and Holistic Health for seven years when I discovered the deep healing benefits of yoga, meditation and pranayama (breath work) to help my own body heal after a serious illness. I was a Dental Nurse for many years but after falling ill, I changed the course of my life and realised what was important to me.
I retrained in Reiki, Holistic Therapies and Yoga – everything that had helped me heal. My background is Yin Yoga and I’m a fully qualified International Yoga teacher in a multi styled practice. I now have a Holistic Health Practice in Easingwold and a Yoga Studio/Healing Room in Coxwold where I run day retreats and weekend retreats.
We can’t wait to welcome you.

Amanda Kitchen of Pura Vida Holistic Therapies and Yoga, and Mykela McAlpine of Angel Holistic Therapies, invite you to join them for this nourishing and balancing half day event. We will guide and support you through a balanced itinerary which includes yoga, meditation, relaxation, pranayama (breathing techniques), aromatherapy, Bush Flower Essences and Homeopathy. We hope that you leave the session feeling hormonally re-balanced and with the tools and techniques to be able to continue your journey from peri to post menopause the natural way. The event is suitable for complete beginners through to more experienced yogis.
Outline of the event:
Ice breaker, welcome and introductions – what is the menopause and what does it mean for you?
Share your experiences of your menopause journey in a safe, relaxed space where we will respect one another and with the understanding that anything that is discussed will remain confidential.
Nurturing cacao ceremony, guided meditation and Hatha yoga for the menopause – Amanda
What is cacao and how can it benefit the menopause?
Cacao comes from the bean, is a beautiful, sacred, ancient plant medicine, having incredible healing properties and is considered as a superfood so it is very nutritious containing wonderful healthy fats, excellent levels of magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, calcium, manganese, sulphur and phosphorous, which our diet is generally deficient in. Our bodies need all of these wonderful minerals for our emotional and physical well-being and balance so it’s fantastic to work with for the menopause. It has a real emotional grounding and heart opening energy to it.
Pure, ceremonial grade cacao is raw chocolate without all the vegetable oils and sugar we see added to processed chocolate and it doesn’t come in powder form so don’t confuse it with cocoa powder or hot chocolate. Ceremonial cacao comes in a solid – usually a block as it contains all the original healthy wonderful fats.
Benefits of cacao:
A short, grounding and heart opening meditation will follow, focusing on the Earth element (Prithvi) to help us connect with the root chakra, Muladhara – meaning root, support or foundation – located in the base of the spine and the heart chakra – Anahata located in the centre of the chest which relates to the element of air. Amanda will then guide you through a nourishing and balancing Hatha yoga session focusing on postures that support the menopause including hot flushes, anxiety, irritability and insomnia. Some restorative postures will be included as they relax the nervous system and may improve the functioning of the endocrine system which is responsible for hormone production (especially the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the thyroid and parathyroid glands which help the body regulate hormonal fluctuations.
Nutrition, Homeopathy and Bush Flower Essences for the menopause – Mykela
Aromatherapy for the Menopause – Amanda
Shitali breathing technique (the cooling breath) – Amanda
Meditation for the menopause – Mykela
Mykela is a Homeopath and Australian Bush Flower Essence Practitioner, Reiki Master and Holistic Therapist who loves working with people to help bring them back into their groove. Mykela has a particular interest in hormones and helping to rebalance from the first menstruation up until menopause. She also has a passion in gut healing and she uses a combination of therapies and tools to help facilitate your healing journey by helping you discover your way back to balance and harmony.

We will encourage, guide and support you through a balanced itinerary which includes yoga, meditation, relaxation, nutrition and breath work. We hope that you leave the session feeling refreshed, re-juvenated and inspired to continue with your new healthy lifestyle. The retreat is suitable for complete beginners through to more experienced yogis.
Outline of the Day
Welcome and introductions.
Amanda will then lead you in a nurturing Cacao ceremony. Cacao is an ancient, healing sacred plant heart medicine that enables us to connect with ourselves personally using intentions and helps us release pent up emotions and that which no longer serves us. Cacao is a feminine plant spirit that will help to guide, support and bring intention to the light, open heart so you may live from the heart at all times and sparkle and shine your light. You can purchase your ceremonial grade organic cacao from : https://www.forevercacao.co.uk/?ref=deze1xojhot. Alternative suggestions will be emailed to you prior to the event.
Benefits of cacao:
The benefits are many but here are a few:
Increases focus and concentration.
Brings a deep feeling of calmness and peace and is a natural anti-depressant
It is a powerful antioxidant and contains excellent levels of magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, calcium, manganese, sulphur and phosphorous, which our diet is generally deficient in
Our bodies need all of these wonderful minerals for our emotional and physical well-being and balance
Strengthens the cardiovascular system, heart function
Regulates blood pressure and blood sugar
Amanda will follow with a short, grounding meditation, focusing on the Earth element (Prithvi) to help us connect with the root chakra, Muladhara – meaning root, support or foundation – located in the base of the spine.
A nourishing Hatha yoga session with Jools will then follow, continuing the theme of the Earth Element, the first chakra which is associated with grounding, stabilising, security, safety, solidity and balancing. When the root chakra is balanced, we cultivate stillness, solidity, and stability giving us a feeling of being resilient, confident, flexible, strong and safe.
“It is not how far you move into a pose but how deeply you feel the pose that you are in”. – ANODEA JUDITH
Amanda will teach the second half of the yoga class, continuing to focus on the heart, the fourth chakra (Anahata) to open and expand the heart and to allow dissolution of ego and separateness. When the heart is open, we feel compassion, love, peace and kindness not only towards others, but also towards ourselves. And when the heart chakra is balanced, we feel radiant, joyful and generous. Amanda will focus on postures to open the chest and shoulders, backbends and breath openers, allowing for spaciousness and expansion.
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it” – RUMI.
A 30-minute lunch break will precede the second half of the retreat day.
Join Jools and Amanda in four demonstrations of highly nutritious, nourishing and energising vegan and/or vegetarian plant-based cookery demonstrations. The recipes will use both raw and cooked ingredients. The recipe, method and benefits of each will be emailed to participants prior to the retreat day. Below are the four delicious delights:
Delicious green breakfast.
This delicious green breakfast is packed full of nutrients and contains numerous vitamins and minerals so it’s a fantastic way to start your day. It’s a great source of antioxidants, which help strengthen your immune system by defending cells against free radical damage and help increase the production of white blood cells, helping to protect your body against infections and disease, which is especially important at this time.
Organic cacao energy balls.
These healthy and raw organic Cacao energy balls are a snap to make and require no cooking, just chilling. A perfect pre or post work-out snack, portable pick-me-up or healthy sweet treat
What is Kombucha and its benefits?
Kombucha is a fermented tea which is full of beneficial probiotics, polyphenols and vitamin C, Kombucha helps increase the diversity of the beneficial bacteria in the gut. These probiotic bacteria help balance the immune system, regulate the metabolism and recent research points to a link between a health gut microbiome and a healthy mind. In addition, the probiotics help improve digestion and elimination and can be very beneficial to people suffering with disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s disease and leaky gut syndrome. Kombucha is lightly fizzy and tastes a little like cider but only contains a negligible amount of alcohol. It’s delicious and very refreshing when chilled and can be used as the basis of cocktails and salad dressings. It can be flavoured using fresh fruits, herbs and spices and it’s fun to experiment to find your favourite! Brewing your own couldn’t be easier and the raw ingredients are cheap and readily available.
A delicious, quick and easy to prepare vegan soup, which is a powerhouse of nutrients including vitamins, minerals and phyto nutrients. The soup is made from an array of green vegetables which are known to contain substances which act as powerful antioxidants in the body. The soup promotes the health of the liver, is anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic and anti-viral. The high fibre content helps eliminate toxins in the body and the high level of beta carotene and polyphenols promote the health of the skin, bones and internal organs. The ingredients can be varied to suit whatever is available and in season and is ideal to use up any surplus vegetables from the allotment or garden. You will be amazed at how good this tastes!
Jools will then lead the group through a calming Pranayama practice, Nadi Soshana, helping to bring the energy channels of the body, the Nadis, into equilibrium. This will lead into our final practice of the day, a wonderfully relaxing Yoga Nidra, or yogic ‘sleep’, designed to lead you into a stage of deep relaxation, whilst maintaining full consciousness of the workings of the body, mind and emotions.

The yoga we will explore will predominantly be Hatha based but we will also explore elements of Vinyasa flow.
Hatha Yoga works at a slower pace and works with individual postures and includes pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation and relaxation. It is ideal for those beginning their yoga journey and who are newer to yoga or for those who want to improve their practice.
Classes will begin with some pranayama to settle you on the mat and connect your mind with your breath and body followed by a nourishing warm up leading into an energising asana practice (postures) to improve your flexibility, stability, strength and muscle tone. Awaken your senses with a guided, restorative savasana (relaxation) followed by a guided meditation to cultivate a calm, steady mind and connect with your inner-self and boost feelings of wellbeing and happiness.
Vinyasa flow is a dynamic, creative style of yoga in which the asana (postures) are linked together and synchronised with a yogic breath. This style of yoga allows you to feel the physical power of a yoga practice. When we begin to move through a physical flow with the breath our inner energies begin to flow more freely through the body leaving us feeling energised and revitalised. This style is rooted in Ashtanga so often includes an Ashtanga style ‘vinyasa’ to link sequences – unlike Ashtanga, you will enjoy and experience a creative mixture of postures and sequencing rather than it being set. Sessions typically begin with pranayama to connect the mind with the body and breath followed by an energising warm up. A cool down is followed by a short savasana.
We will explore different forms of Pranayama to switch on the Parasympathetic Nervous System to cultivate a calm mind and help alleviate stress, anxiety and mild depression. We will also explore some pranayama techniques that are more energising for the body.
Control and/or quieten the mind focusing on different meditation techniques such as visualisation using nature and the five great elements, (earth, water, fire, air and space), mantras, a word repeated to aid concentration, chanting, focusing on internal sound (nada) and chakras to bring you into conscious being and connect with your inner-self to cultivate joy and happiness. Just being rather than doing.
